Google plans to make a move to bring legitimate music free to China

Google will announce its plans for a joint venture with Top100.cn which offers users free downloads of music licensed in China. The collaboration between the two companies use online advertising to generate revenue, according to Reuters.

Top 100 was launched using the capital of Yao Ming, the Chinese basketball star, and industry professional Ge Chen in an initial amount of $ 2.78 million.

Google plans to enter the market for Chinese music will come as stiff competition for the other music sites like Baidu. Baidu.com has developed its position as the leading search service in China by offering music pirated MP3 versions.

Just last week, IFPI, Warner, Universal and Sony filed a lawsuit against Baidu, Sohu.com and Yahoo China to give users access to the infringement of copyrighted materials. The IFPI report indicates “more than 99 percent of all music distributed in China are pirated.” China’s legitimate music market has little influence on the global music sales, probably less than 1 percent.

A spokesman for Google declined to comment on the company, saying the company does not comment on rumors. No other details have been released in draft agreement.
