If you have ever browsed the Internet looking for a fashionable designer bag, then you know that counterfeiting fashion pieces is a huge business that operates globally. It is getting more and more difficult to tell the difference between a genuine designer bag by Louis Vuitton, for example, from a “knock off”.
I recently read an article and someone in the fashion industry who claimed to be “in the know say that some of these fakes maybe actually be made by the original designer; they produce the original highly sought after piece and then simply produce extra pieces (bags for example), then change a few small details simply to sell them later for a small percentage of the retail price on the black market. Though this claim may be substantiated in some instances, there can be little truth that Louis Vuitton would ever take part in this sort of scheme. In fact, they are vigilant in bringing those who copy their designs to court for prosecution.
Some think that authentic items are slowly losing their value as imitations are being substituted for the genuine products as the demand increases. No doubt the demand is there for fake designer pieces. Maybe it’s the peer pressure. Most people cannot afford the authentic bag and so it’s a simple alternative to search online or even a street corner in a large city, to buy a knockoff piece. These imitation designer goods are easy to find in large urban areas such as Los Angeles and New York. It used to be much simpler to spot a fake: cheap hardware, shoddy leather, and misspelled logos were often a dead giveaway.
Nowadays, the imitations are so similar to the original that oftentimes only someone with a trained eye can tell the difference. If you are thinking of buying a designer bag and it is selling at a 10 percent of the costof the originals, then you can be pretty confident that you are buying a fake. People justify their purchases of knockoff designer handbags by simply stating that they cannot afford the real cost of the item just to look stylish. They simply think that a counterfeit Vuitton that costs $75 gives the real LV a run for it’s money.
Carrying a bag that may look like a $500 handbag feels like carrying a genuine status symbol. As long as no one realizes that it is not the real thing, who cares?”, they might ask. Well, the designer certainly cares and if they have their way, those pieces will be disappearing from the streets, once the counterfeiters start having to cough up hefty fines and paying for legal fees.
