RIM BlackBerry data service has its second major power outage
One of the most popular smartphones for business people is the BlackBerry. The device also is nicknamed the “CrackBerry” by some users, because for many life without the device is difficult.
Monday, BlackBerry users began to report that the BlackBerry service data provided by Research in Motion (RIM) has fallen. According to Information Week, users of the BlackBerry service reported problems sending and receiving e-mail and documents.
A spokesman for AT & T said that AT & T learned that the cuts at about 3:30 pm EST and that the problem was not with the network of AT & T or other wireless networks. The problem is with the data provided by RIM service.
An email message was sent to large customers RIM BlackBerry calling problem, “the existing infrastructure BlackBerry outage.” The power outage was only for the Americas of the network according to RIM.
This was the second outage BlackBerry service. DailyTech reported in April 2007 about the massive power outage that left many users without service BlackBerry. Reuters quotes Carmi Levy, senior vice president of strategic consulting at SR Communications, who said that “the reliability of the service is a major concern for companies like RIM, because if problems become routine, which may in turn customers and potential buyers away. ” Levy described the cuts as “a major Achilles heel” of RIM.
RIM announced today that the service outage lasted for three hours and was caused by a system upgrade that was done to increase the overall capacity of BlackBerry e-mail and data services. According RIM these updates are performed regularly and similar updates made in the past without any problems.
Information Week reports RIM issued a written statement on the outage, “RIM beginning of the investigation into the service interruption that occurred on Monday, pointing to an internal problem of data with a system of routing within the infrastructure of the BlackBerry services that have been recently updated. Updating is part of the routine of RIM and ongoing efforts to enhance the overall capacity for long-term growth. “
