Users who bought Windows Server Home continue to obtain more than negotiated, and sometimes a little less.
Home Windows Server, released with much applause and tried to offer solutions storage server of origin, with the hardware, from around $ 599. Shortly after his release, it was discovered that the server to access data from a small list of programs could irredeemably corrupt files.
The loss of data, seen by many as a cardinal sin server world, made the issue a top priority for Microsoft and the company promised in a blog corporate solution over the Christmas season.
Two months later it had failed and set the list of programmes carried out by the corruption that flourished to include such programs as Photoshop, Windows Media Player 11, iTunes, Excel, and Microsoft’s own software Zune. Now even more programs have been added to the list. Database Knowledge of Windows article was updated to include the new potential problems.
Terry Walsh issued a blog response to the increasing number of problems. The blog site is very popular among users of Windows Home Server. Walsh acknowledged that the list of potential candidates corruption has grown enormously and affect large numbers of users. Walsh says, “It is clear that setting is not yet available, but I have been told [by Microsoft] is that this is a very high priority.”
Walsh councils not modify any file directly on the server of origin. Walsh is of the opinion that with the growing list, any program can be vulnerable to corrupt data. Walsh said that the simple solution is to copy the file to a local machine, modify it to your local computer, and then copy of the new server shortage. Doing so could significantly increase working time, but it protects users against possible data loss. Another key point raised by Walsh is that the error only users with systems effects with more than one hard drive. Thus, the vulnerable population consists of HD multi-user, still an important part of the users.
Interestingly Microsoft removed a reference before the database article that stated that corruption error could be triggered by stress on the server. This would indicate that WHS is equally capable of experiencing corruption under light loads. Microsoft is now saying that the problem appears to be caused by the savings of “alternate data streams” of the programme, which is incompatible with the “Drive Extender” WHS method used to make multiple physical disks appear as a single disk.
Alternate data streams protected uses data from users. Its used for meta data, data from digital rights management, copyright data, and other information that is stored in a sensitive way. Streams are used infrequently, but can result from a wide variety of programs. Microsoft has made available a tool of the special controls file streams. Files that detects should not be changed, WHS, as doing so poses a serious risk of data loss.
Microsoft has not commented on whether alternate data streams are the only culprit thats causing corruption, although the company is considering carefully the issue further.
